Lamentations 3:24 “I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for HIM!”
HIS Watchfires Within!
Having each our own race, we have purpose…an offering. Unique for all days till the LORD has returned. For CHRIST as our Bishop and Shepherd, Love’s SAVIOUR!
Thus for HIM, with earnest, we zealously yearn!
If we choose to move forward, that is, into battle, prepared with HIS armor; engaged in HIS WORD! Unlike those who yet linger outside — even hiding; whose walk with the LORD is quite distant — observed.
For who can see GOD’s steps if HIS watchfires they avoid? Or…whose distant ears can clearly hear HIS call? There is no prize when absent is our presence from the LORD’s!
But WITH HIM, our steps are sure! We shall not fall!
Within CHRIST WHO is close as our next breaths’ indwelling, so shall we be held even as we now are!
Then though CHRIST leads our steps through Life’s valleys of Darkness…
victoriously drawn shall we be by HIS heart!
As HIServant waiting on the LORD,
Devotional: On Sunday I was privileged to preach on Lamentations 3 which turns out to be a very encouraging chapter! It actually is!
We see Jeremiah tasked by GOD to preach to a hostile crowd, his own people. He is ridiculed, rejected, and rebuffed….repeatedly.
As we review his overall, weeping ministry, one might gather that he didn’t have much success. Just using today’s church growth measurements, Jeremiah’s efforts would likely not receive a passing grade.
But to GOD Almighty, Jeremiah did what he was tasked with. Preach to an ungrateful, backslidden nation that had chosen to forget their GOD. We read they had faces of flint and hearts harder than stone.
What opposition to the ONE WHO redeemed with HIS own right hand! What offense they took to simply obeying the smallest of HIS commands!
So how should we approach this book of Lamentations? Is it a story of failure or one of great insight and encouragement SO THAT we draw near to HIS watchfires?
In the epic song, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, we see the words,
“I can see HIM in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps, they have builders HIM an altar in the evening dews and damps…I can read HIS righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps…HIS day is marching on!!”
Jeremiah, as are we all here, was drawn to GOD’s watchfires. In fact, as he says in Jeremiah 20:7-9
“Oh LORD, YOU induced me, and I was persuaded; YOU are stronger than I, and have prevailed.
I am in derision daily; Everyone mocks me.
For when I spoke, I cried out; I shouted, “Violence and plunder!” because the word of the LORD was made to me a reproach and a derision daily.
Then I said, “I will not make mention of HIM, nor speak anymore in HIS NAME.” But HIS WORD was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back…and I could not.”
You see, GOD put HIS watchfire INSIDE of Jeremiah and I submit to you that HE has done the same with us! That’s the HOLY SPIRIT fire within us which warms our souls!
So HE draws us THROUGH the valleys of the Shadow of Death to call out HIS Good News to the Lost and the Wounded!
“In the beauty of the lilies, CHRIST was born across the Sea,
With a glory in HIS bosom that transfigures you and me;
As HE died to make men holy, let us die to make men free…
while GOD is marching on!!”
Then let us die to self, Beloved, and shout out to set souls free…for with Victory HE is coming! Praise the LORD!
Amen and amen!
