As Broken Bereans!

1 John 5:21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols.”

As Broken Bereans!

Idolized heroes

even those of the Faith

drag down countless souls

from looking to CHRIST.

Well meaning intentions

still end with confusion

by pointing above and

then back to themselves.

As such, Idol worship

creates idle hands

unwilling to turn

Scriptures pages themselves.

Adverse to study

and found without Zeal,

they “live” through another

to “expedite” Faith.

But this isn’t Truth!

You must take Time to walk

on the path which HE chose

for your soul to press in.

Yes, just for your steps

with Rigor proceeding

and eyes upon CHRIST…

so be a Berean!

As HIServant, scribe and fellow Berean set upon HIS WORD with great study,

Devotional: 2 Timothy 2:14-15 “Remind the believers of these things, charging them before GOD to avoid quarreling over words, which is in no way profitable and leads its listeners to ruin. 15 Make every effort to present yourself approved to GOD, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the WORD of Truth.”

In service on Sunday, Tim commenting on idol worship. Namely, worshiping, praying and believing in anything other than JESUS exclusively.

Therefore, any church or teaching organization claiming CHRIST as their focus will face a challenge — if they do not follow through or if they contradict their own statement. At least…it used to be that way.

Like a non-athletic parent living vicariously through the life of their very athletic child, so many a church member are seen doing the same with their pastor or church leader. Subtle as well as painfully obvious servant-worship exists today.

1 Corinthians 10:7Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY.”

Where most bibles remain closed, (There’s the powerpoint presentation with the verse on it, so why take the time?) cross-referencing is thought of as some intersecting line exercise and study…well, study is reduced to watching the pastor’s face closely as he goes through his sermon. Where worship is temporal and hands and hearts which should be digging deep, are actually IDLE! Idle worship then is wretched and reprehensible.

In contrast, the most steadfast standing believers are those that always have the Bible open AND…and are studying many verses. These are they who make it through regular storms with proven Faith. They live the WORD of GOD and breath its contents, both in and out upon others, with all humility.

Their focus, as I pray ours surely exhibits daily, is on learning constantly from their spiritual hero and CREATOR, GOD HIMSELF.

“Idle hands are the devil’s workshop” or the “devil’s tools” is a quote from as far back as the 12th century.

Here are some of the quotes I found.

“If the devil finds a man idle, he’ll set him at work.” (J. Kelly, Scottish Proverbs, 1721)

“If the devil catch a man idle, he’ll set him at work. (T. Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732)

“The Turks have a proverb, which says, that “The devil tempts all other men, but that idle men tempt the devil.” (Colton, Lacon, 1820)

The point is: if your fingers aren’t moved by your heart to grasp HIS WORD tightly, opening and turning the pages of the Bible diligently seeking GOD’s truths for yourself, then you are by definition. IDLE.

Listen closely to Proverbs 26:14-15 “As a door turns on its hinges, so the sluggard turns on his bed. 15 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

So why take a Bible to church if you’re really not going to open it? There’s no entrance requirement that you have a bible in hand.

I’m intentionally questioning us all. Like Proverbs, is our hand ON the Bible but never really IN the Bible?

Are we focused on the font instead of HIS content? Look in the mirror, ask yourself honestly, look at your Bible’s covers and pages ends? Are you IN the WORD and MOVING through it diligently…as a Berean?

Many have a verse for the day pop up on their phone each morning but that’s all the depth of the reading they do. Rather than condemnation here, my purpose is exhortation and encouragement!

One can study for study’s sake and know lots of Scriptures. The Pharisees back then and even today have that Knowledge piece nailed down.

BUT! The Zeal of the LORD is missing. Their Passion for CHRIST has been willingly replaced with passion for activities ABOUT CHRIST.

There is a huge difference between a relentless focus on minutiae and a broken and contrite studying HIS WORD without any pride.

There’s a huge difference between going to church to learn doctrine and be taught deeper truths and those really going to church just for the praise and worship.

Being “a broken Berean” means one craves the meat and doctrine of HIS WORD over entertainment-based offerings.

Make no mistake and I’ve written tons on this before. I LOVE praise and worship music and entering into HIS presence.

BUT!! MOVE FORWARD! Press into a deeper and deeper walk with HIM. The milk of praise songs is wondrous and compelling but. It. isn’t. Doctrine. Period.

Again consider Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.”

Isn’t lukewarm worship an idol? Isn’t the yearning just for the mountain top experience with CHRIST…insufficient?

I submit that each must look within and judge for themself. My prayer is that our souls all are as full of the WORD of GOD…as if every verse was highlighted on the tablets of our broken hearts!

Amen and amen!
